Yancey County is a mostly rural county situated in the northern part of Western North Carolina. Bordered by Mitchell County to the east, Madison County to the west, McDowell County to the south, and Tennessee to the north, Yancey County boasts breathtaking mountain scenery. Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi, is located within its borders, along with 18 other peaks higher than 6,000 feet.
The county seat and largest town in Yancey County is Burnsville. At a 2,822 ft. above sea level elevation, Burnsville offers a charming mountain lifestyle with historic inns, theater, and appealing climate during most of the year. Burnsville is home to more artisans and craftsmen per capita than any other town in America. Other major industries include Christmas tree and boxwood farming.
Burnsville hosts the Mount Mitchell Crafts Fair, a wonderful display of quilters, potters, wood workers, and other mountain crafts held every August at the town square. The festival, at over 50 years old, is one of the longest running festivals in North Carolina.
